One cap Super Eagles midfielder Sunday Stephen made his debut for Red Salt Lake lost 1-0 defeat to the Portland Timbers in the club’s first preseason match against at FC Tucson’s Kino Sports Complex.
A first-minute goal by Lucas Melano made the difference in the game that saw the 27 year old being replaced on the hour mark by Luke Mulholland.
After the first game, Head Coach Jeff Cassar was already impressed with his efforts.
“I think he’s a good player. He’s smart, he’s technical, he has a good range of passing,” he said.
“It’s been a couple of months since he’s been playing so we just have to get him introduced on how we play, but he’s fitting in really good.”
Real Salt Lake’s next match is against Seongnam FC from South Korea on Sunday at the same venue.
Sunny has starred for Israeli side Bnei Sakhnin, CSKA Sofia in Bulgaria and Alanyaspor in Turkey before landing with Real Salt Lake.
